Equivalent Mass of an Acid Calculator

Equivalent Mass of an Acid Calculator is a tool that helps to find the mass of an acid using the molecular mass of the acid and the number of ionizable hydrogen ions of the acid.

What is meant by the Mass of the Acids?

Calculating the equivalent mass of an acid is play an important role in various quantitative analyses of acid in labs and different chemical reactions. The equivalent mass of an acid refers to the mass of the acid required to neutralize one equivalent of a base or react with one equivalent of another substance.

The equivalent mass also known as the equivalent gram represents the mass of an acid that can donate one equivalent of hydrogen ions (H+). It is expressed in grams per equivalent mass (g/eq mass) and depends on the number of acidic hydrogens in the acid molecule.

Formula:

Em = Mw/H

Where,

  • Em = Equivalent mass of an acid
  • Mm = Molecular mass of acid
  • H = number of ionizable hydrogen ions

How to evaluate the Mass of the Acid?

Example 1:

Find the Equivalent mass of hydrochloric acid (HCI) if its molecular mass is approximately 36 and its number of ions is 4.

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the data from the question.

 Molecular mass = Mm = 36, Number of ions = H = 4, Em =?

Step 2:

Write the formula of the weight of the acid.

Em = Mm/H

Where, Em = Equivalent mass of an acid, Mm = Molecular mass of acid, H = number of ionizable hydrogen ions

Step 3:

Putting all values in the above formula carefully and simplifying.

Mm = 36, H = 4

Em = Mm/H

Em = 36/4

Em = 9

Example 2:

Find the Equivalent mass of Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) if its molecular mass is approximately 96 and its number of ions is 12.

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the data from the question.

 Molecular mass = Mm = 96, Number of ions = H = 12, Em =?

Step 2:

Write the formula of the mass of the acid.

Em = Mm/H

Where, Em = Equivalent mass of an acid, Mm = Molecular mass of acid, H = number of ionizable hydrogen ions

Step 3:

Putting all values in the above formula carefully and simplifying.

Mm = 96, H = 12

Em = Mm/H

Em = 96/12

Em = 8

Example 3:

Find the Equivalent mass of Sulfuric Acid (H2SO4) if its molecular mass is approximately 144 and its number of ions is 12.

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the data from the question.

 Molecular mass = Mm = 144, Number of ions = H = 12, Em =?

Step 2:

Write the formula of the mass of the acid.

Em = Mm/H

Where, Em = Equivalent mass of an acid, Mm = Molecular mass of acid, H = number of ionizable hydrogen ions

Step 3:

Putting all values in the above formula carefully and simplifying.

Mm = 144, H = 12

Em = Mm/H

Em = 144/12

Em = 12
