What is Horsepower?

"Horsepower" (hp) is a unit of power used in the English-speaking world. It was first coined by the engineer James Watt in the late 18th century to compare the output of steam engines with the power of draft horses, which were common in England at the time. 

One horsepower is the ability to do 550 foot-pounds of work per second or, equivalently, 746 watts. Mathematically, it can be expressed as:

or

1hp = 550 ft⋅lbf/s 

Where:

  • W stands for watts, which is the SI unit of power.
  • ft stands for feet.
  • lbf stands for pound-force.
  • s stands for seconds.

Horsepower is widely used to describe the maximum power output of engines in automobiles, airplanes, and various machinery. Different contexts might use slightly different variations of horsepower like "metric horsepower" or "electrical horsepower," which have their own definitions and conversion factors, albeit quite similar to the original definition by Watt.

In modern times, watts are becoming the more universal unit for power measurement across different domains and regions due to the global adoption of the metric system. Nonetheless, horsepower remains a prevalent unit in certain industries and regions.

Formula for Horsepower:

When dealing with rotating machines like engines, horsepower (HP) can be calculated using torque (T) and speed (N) with the following formula:

HP = T×N/5252

Where:

  • T is the torque in pound-feet (lb-ft).
  • N is the speed in revolutions per minute (RPM).

 

The denominator "5252" is a constant derived from the conversion between foot pounds, minutes, and horsepower. 

How to calculate Horsepower?

Imagine an engine operating at 3000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and generating a torque of 200 pound-feet (lb-ft). We want to find out how much horsepower the engine is producing.

Given:

Speed(N) = 3000RPM

Torque(T) = 200lb-ft

Solution:

Plug the given values into the formula:

HP = 200lb-ft×3000RPM/5252

HP = 600000lb-ft⋅RPM/5252

HP ≈ 114.2

Answer:

The engine produces approximately 114.2 horsepower.
