Oxide Calculator

Write the values of the weight of metal oxide and the weight of metal then hit on calculate button to get the equivalent weight of oxygen.

What is meant by Oxide?

Oxides are abundant in nature and have various types with distinct characteristics. These are chemical compounds with one or more oxygen atoms attached to another element. It comes into being when an element reacts with oxygen.

Formula:

W = Second Weight – First Weight

E w = [w2 / (Second Weight – First Weight)] × atomic weight of oxygen

Different types of Oxides

Here few types of oxides with their characteristics are discussed.

Oxides

Detail

Metal Oxides

Metal oxides can be basic, amphoteric, or acidic, depending on their chemical properties. Examples include calcium oxide (Ca O) and magnesium oxide (MgO).

Non-Metal Oxides

Non-metal oxides are generally acidic and tend to react with bases to form salts and water. Examples include sulfur trioxide (SO3), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon dioxide (CO2).

Peroxides

They are known for their ability to release oxygen when heated or decomposed. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) is a common example of a peroxide.

Hydroxides

Although not strictly oxides, hydroxides are compounds that contain the hydroxyl group (-OH) along with a metal or non-metal. Examples of hydroxides include sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and calcium hydroxide (Ca (OH)2).

Binary Oxides

Binary oxides consist of only two elements, one of which is oxygen. Examples of binary oxides include carbon monoxide (CO), which is a non-metal oxide iron oxide (Fe2O3), which is a metal oxide.

Examples

Example 1:

When the Weight of metal oxide for the Second = 55 grams and the Weight of metal for the first = 15 grams then determine the equivalent weight of oxygen.

Solution

Step 1:

Write the given values

Weight of metal oxide for second = 55 grams

Weight of metal for first = 15 grams

Step 2:

Using formula:

W = Second Weight – First Weight

Ew= [w2 / (w2 - w1)] × atomic weight of oxygen

Step 3:

Weight of oxygen (W) = 55-15 = 40 grams

Equivalent weight (Ew) = (55 / 40) × 8

Equivalent weight (Ew) = 11

Example 2:

Evaluate the equivalent weight of oxygen. When the Weight of metal oxide for the Second = 32 grams and the Weight of metal for the first = 16 grams

Solution

Step 1:

Write the given values

Weight of metal oxide for second = 32 grams

Weight of metal for first = 16 grams

Step 2:

Using formula:

W = Second Weight – First Weight

Ew= [w2 / (w2 - w1)] × atomic weight of oxygen

Step 3:

Weight of oxygen (W) = 32-16 = 16

Equivalent weight (Ew) = (32/16) × 8

Equivalent weight (Ew) = 16
