Water Horsepower Calculator:

The water Horsepower Calculator is a mathematical tool that is used to calculate the horsepower of a water pump or the amount of power or energy necessary to move water at particular heights. Water Horsepower Calculator also provides a step-by-step solution to every related problem.

What is meant by Water Horsepower?

The smallest amount of power needed to move water is referred to as water horsepower. It is the amount of electricity a pump would need if it were completely efficient. In other words, the Water Horsepower (WHP) is a unit of power that represents the rate at which work is done to move water.

If the entire head force required to produce the water flow and the flow rate are known then water horsepower is calculated using the values.

The formula of water Horsepower

To compute the water horsepower (WHP) using the below formula.

WHP = H × Q / 3960

Where,

  • H = total head or pressure (in ft)
  •  Q = Total flow rate of water (in gallons per minute, simply say gpm)

How to evaluate the WHP?

Example 1:

The flow rate of the water supply system of buildings is measured at 80 gallons per minute and the total head or pressure is 30 feet then find the total water horsepower.

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the data from the above question.

Total flow rate of water = Q = 80, Total head or pressure = H = 30, WHP =?

Step 2:

Write the formula water Horsepower.

WHP = (Q × H) / 3960

Where, H = total head or pressure (in ft), Q = Total flow rate of water (in gpm).

Step 3:

Now putting the values in the above formula.

Q = 80, H = 30.

WHP = (80) × (30)/ 3960

WHP = 2400 / 3960

WHP = 0.6666 HP

Example 2:

The flow rate of water is measured at 100 gallons per minute (gpm) and the total head or pressure against which the water needs to pump is 50 feet then find the water horsepower.

Solution:

Step 1:

Write the data from the above question.

Total flow rate of water = Q = 100, Total head or pressure = H = 50, WHP =?

Step 2:

Write the formula water Horsepower.

WHP = (Q × H) / 3960

Where, H = total head or pressure (in ft), Q = Total flow rate of water (in gpm).

Step 3:

Now putting the values in the above formula.

Q = 100, H = 50.

WHP = (100) × (50)/ 3960

WHP = 5000 / 3960

WHP = 1.39 HP
